In 1997 the undefeated Fenton varsity football team faced off against the undefeated Lapeer West Panthers in a highly publicized game between two of the states best teams. Lapeer West was ranked number three in the state in class A while Fenton was a class BB school. The game was Played at Lapeer West. After being down 14-3 at half time, Fenton rallied in the second half to make the score 14-10. After recovering a fumble and driving the ball down to the Lapeer West 1 yard line late in the game, Fenton faced a fourth and 1 in the final seconds of the game, down by 4. Fenton senior fullback Corey Becker took a hand off and dove into the end zone scoring the game winning touchdown with only 8 seconds left. Fenton's sideline erupted and Lapeer West players wept as they left the field knowing that their twenty-some game league winning streak and dominance over the Flint Metro league had come to an end. Fenton was sure to jump into the top ten in the state after a victory of this magnitude. But wait, some time after the winning touchdown was scored, the referees reversed the call and said that Becker was down at the 1 yard line. The ball was turned over to Lapeer West who then ran out the final 8 seconds of the game. As the rival teams shook hands after the game, key Lapeer West players said that Becker did indeed score the winning touchdown and that the game was given to them by the referees. Lapeer West Fans in the stands that day told Fenton fans that they didn't want the victory because it was really Fenton's victory. After viewing game films, it was 100% clear that Becker did indeed score the winning touchdown for Fenton and that the referees took it upon themselves to give a victory to Lapeer West. The game cost Fenton a playoff spot and a chance for a state title. The referees were later banned from refereeing any games at Fenton High School. It is still a sore subject for anyone from Fenton who played in the game.
Now, after 8 years of losing seasons, the Fenton Varsity Football program is 6-1 as of October 10th, and have clinched a spot in the playoffs for the first time in 8 years.
