bonuses = The Prix Chaudenay is a Group 2 flat horse race inFrance open to three-year-oldthoroughbred s. It is run over a distance of 3,000 metres (approximately 1⅞ miles) atLongchamp Racecourse , and it takes place annually, presently in late September or early October.First run in 1875, the race was originally titled the Prix de l'Espérance. Like the present version this was run over 3,000 metres at Longchamp, but rather than the autumn it took place in the springtime. For many years the race served as a trial for the
Grand Prix de Paris , which was then also contested over 3,000 metres. The Prix de l'Espérance was abandoned from 1915 to 1918 because of
World War I . There were no cancellations duringWorld War II , although it was sometimes necessary for the event to switch to an alternative venue. It was temporarily transferred to Maisons-Laffitte in 1943, and to Tremblay in 1944 and 1945. The only subsequent cancellation of the race was in 1968.When the present system of race grading was introduced in the early 1970s, the Prix de l'Espérance was initially classed as a Group 3 event. It was promoted to its current Group 2 status in 1987. At this point the race was moved to late June or early July, and it ceased to be a trial for the Grand Prix de Paris. The distance of the latter event was now considerably shorter, at 2,000 metres.
In 1990 the race was given a new title, the Prix Hubert de Chaudenay. This was in memory of
Hubert de Chaudenay (1903–1989), a prominent figure in French racing who served as president of the sport's governing body, the "Société d'Encouragement", from 1974 to 1985. Hubert's father Jean had been similarly honoured with thePrix Jean de Chaudenay .Towards the end of the 1990s the Prix Hubert de Chaudenay briefly left its regular home for two runnings at Maisons-Laffitte. When it returned to Longchamp in 1999 it was moved to its present calendar position – the Saturday of the
Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe weekend. The "Arc" itself takes place on the first Sunday in October. The Prix Hubert de Chaudenay could now be seen as a possible trial for the Group 1Prix Royal-Oak , which is run later in October at the same venue. The race has been known by its present title, the Prix Chaudenay, since 2004. The Prix Jean de Chaudenay was discontinued that year, and so the title of this event was shortened to honour both father and son, Jean and Hubert.
Throughout its history the race's distance has remained at 3,000 metres. The fastest winning time is 3m 08.1s, recorded by
Reefscape in 2004.Records
