Soho Theatre Company was formed in 1969 by
Verity Bargate andFred Proud . It performed in Old Compton St. Soon, the company moved to theSoho Poly , where it would remain for eighteen years. In 1990, the Soho Company entered a brief migrational period, where it visited the venues of the Royal Court, Riverside Studios, and ICA. Falling into a slow decline, the company was revitalized when it joined the Cockpit Theatre of Marylebone. During this "renaissance", the Soho Theatre company expanded its now famous Writers' Development programme, as well as its number of writers.
The building on
Dean Street opened in 2000, with a 144 seat auditorium and an 85 seat studio plus a small performance bar overlooking the street and Cafe Lazeez, an Indian restaurant and bar occupying the ground floor. Its current Artistic Director is Lisa Goldman, formerly Artistic Director of radical, new writing company The Red Room.
