There is some controversy concerning the LHISD's budgetting. During the late 1990's $40,000 was spent on resurfacing the high schools basketball court, during this same time period the school still had an underfunded computer department and was experiencing overcrowding. Later a new highschool was built but experienced extreme structural mistakes and errors.
These have since been corrected but the classrooms are still known for being spartan in comfort and still quite crowded.
LHISD also is notorious locally for it's hair policy. All males must have hair not touching the collar nor any facial hair, if a student is found to have these they are sent home and are not allowed to return until they have shaved or had their hair cut. This is considered an unauthorized absence and can even potentially lead to legal action if the student has to many "tardies".
During the late 1990's the school began a series of policy changes leading in a very large number of teachers leaving the school for other jobs or transfers. This high turn over is believed to be realated to the takeover of the principal positions in two schools by a married couple, Mr. and Mrs. West along with a long time friend of Mr. West, Mrs. Major. During this time "Panther Academy" came into existence which allowed the school to effectively expel students while still collecting tax dollars from their attendance.
The school at one point was known to let students accrue "tardies" and then after enough were accrued filed trunency charges against them with no prior warning.
While the school experienced almost no violent activity police officers were still positioned at each school.
A police officer at the elementry school arrested and hand-cuffed a fourth grader in early 2002 for what is considered at most a minor misdemeanor.
