Bessemer, Michigan . He graduated from [http://www.gogebic.cc.mi.us/ Gogebic Community College] in 1963 andNorthern Michigan University in 1965. Johnson received a master's degree fromMichigan State University in 1970. He was a broadcaster and journalist (working first forWFRV (Channel 5), thenWLUK (Channel 11)) from 1964 until 1996.Johnson was an information specialist with the
United States Army from 1966 until 1968. He was on the board of directors of the Wisconsin United Way.In 1996, Johnson was elected to Congress and served from
January 3 ,1997 untilJanuary 3 ,1999 . He unsuccessfully ran for re-election against state assemblyman Mark Green in 1998. From 2000 to 2001 he was the 36th Director of theUnited States Mint . He is currently the president of the Green Bay Family Violence Relief Center.ources
