The Baltic sprat, "Sprattus sprattus balticus" is aherring -like, marine fish in the familyClupeidae found near the surface in thetemperate northeastAtlantic Ocean in southernSkagerrak andMecklenburg andKiel Bays toKvarken in theGulf of Bothnia and toKronstadt in theGulf of Finland . Its length is up to 16 cm.In the Gulf of Finland the Baltic sprat's eggs develop
pelagic ally and do not descend to the bottom. Spawning occurs far from shore, from the end of May until the beginning of August. Young sprats are commonly known as brisling.Canned sprats (usually smoked) are available in many north European countries, including the Baltic States, Scandinavia, Germany, Poland and Russia. They are an important Latvian export.
