Ranwadi High School

Ranwadi High School

Location

Ranwadi High School is a co-educational boarding school on Pentecost, Vanuatu. It is situated 9km North of Lonorore airport on a small hill. AUSAID (Australian Agency for International Development) has been working at Ranwadi for 2-3 years, building more accommodation for the staff and students, new classrooms and updating the interior of the rooms. Ranwadi is set on the edge of the West Coast, surrounded by a large reef full of tropical corals, fish and sting rays.

2km down from Ranwadi is a 20 - 40 m high waterfall with a large swimming hole below. A short 1 hour work up from Ranwadi is the 'feeder' of this waterfall.

School Life

The principal of Ranwadi is Silas Buli, a well respected man throughout Vanuatu. He has helped Ranwadi achieve and excel in the academic and sporting grades of the school. (His Deputy, is also named Silas). Both have good control over the school. Several of the academic teachers come from different countries other than Vanuatu, usually commencing their placement for the academic year starting in January (unlike many western countries such as the UK and America). In particular the University of Oxford places several teachers of maths, science and english at Ranwadi, as well as at Melsisi school.

School starts at 7am, and continues through until 4pm in the afternoon. During this time, children have up to 9 lessons, with a morning tea and a 1.5 hour lunch break.

Sports

Ranwadi has a strong tradition in sports and participates in the PISSA sports games every year. In 2004 and 2005 they managed to win 3 out of the 4 categories (boy/girl junior/secondary categories). Children who participate in these games are often training every single day in the months leading up.
