La Troienne Stakes

La Troienne Stakes

The La Troienne Stakes is a Grade III race run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky each year on Kentucky Derby Day. Run at a distance of 7 1/2 furlongs, it's open to three-year-old filly sprinters and offers a purse of $100,000.

The race is named for arguably the greatest broodmare in the United States throughout the Twentieth century, the incomparable La Troienne.

Susan's Girl won this race in 1972.

2008 marked the final running of the La Troienne Stakes. Churchill Downs announced in June 2008 that for 2009 this race will be renamed the Eight Belles Stakes in honor of the deceased filly, Eight Belles who placed in the 2008 running of the Kentucky Derby.
