The Silver Strand is a 1 mile long stretch of beach, in Oxnard, California, separating Channel Islands Harbor to the north from the Port of Hueneme. Both the harbor and the port limit access to the beach and its small community to only one road. Because of its location near an open water trench, it's common to see a large array of marine life including dolphins, seals, and jellyfish.
La Jannelle
On April 13, 1970, the luxury cruise liner La Jennelle was anchored off the southern end of the beach near the entrance to Port Hueneme when strong winds began blowing and pushing the boat towards shore. With only two crewman aboard, they were unable to keep the wind and high waves from pushing the boat onto a sand bar near the beach. Since the boat was well over 50 years old at the time and because of the high potential for litigation, the boat was largely ignored by its owners. It quickly became a popular and dangerous place for beach goers to go to. To prevent injury, the navy came in and cut the top off the boat and then filled and surrounded it with rocks and sand. This created a break water for the Port of Hueneme, as well as a popular fishing spot on the south end of the beach.
