- Raedykes
Raedykes Roman Camp is located at National Grid Reference NO 084090,(Landranger, 2004) approximately three miles north of
Fetteresso Castle and two miles southwest ofMuchalls Castle inAberdeenshire ,Scotland . The site has yielded significantarchaeological finds of a majorRoman camp dating probably from either the first or the third centuryAD . The western and northern portions of Raedykes lies in theBurn of Monboys drainage basin , while drainage from the eastern slopes provides runoff to theCowton Burn catchment basin . Raedykes is situated a day's march north fromStracathro Roman Camp and a day's march south ofNormandykes . There are expansive views from the top of the camp compound atGarrison Hill , which would have afforded the Romantroops signaling communication with the Roman fleet plying theNorth Sea . (Hogan, 2007)The general area of Raedykes including nearbyKempstone Hill has been advanced byGabriel Jacques Surenne and other scholars as the likely location for the the battle ofMons Graupius in AD 83 or 84. The prominent hill called Bennachie, further north overlooking Inverurie, near the Roman camp at Durno, is another potential site. However, there is no general agreement about the battle location.ee also
