= Origin of the term =
A Skepchick is the colloquial name given to denote a female skeptic; the word is a
portmanteau of skeptic and chick. The skeptical movement is largely dominated by older males [ [http://www.phact.org/women.htm Why are there so few women skeptics?] Professor DeeAnne Wymer, Phactum 1996] and the name was coined to draw a special distinction to female skeptics. Skepchick.org was started by Rebecca Watson [ [http://skepchick.org/blog/?page_id=855/ Rebecca Watson's Profile on skepchick.org] ] with the stated intent to promote scientific skepticism among women. Rebecca Watson also appears on the
The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe podcast. Skepchick International published a calendar of skepchicks in 2006 with proceeds providing the attendance fee for several female applicants to attend the James Randi Educational Foundation's The Amaz!ng Meeting.
