"The Book of est" was written by George Cockcroft under the pen name Luke Rhinehart. It was first published in 1976 in a hardcover format by Holt, Rinehart and Winston, and a paperback edition was released later in the same year. The book includes a foreword by Werner Erhard.

Erhard Seminars Training, or est (always spelled lowercase), described itself as a psychological and philosophical tool, supposedly based on the works of the philosopher Heidegger, and was started by Werner Erhard who had studied Scientology, Subud, existentialism, Gestalt Therapy, Silva Mind Control and a number of other mind expanding practices.

Some current training courses contain concepts from est. The most notable is by Landmark Education, which bought the rights to the material from Werner Erhard and Associates.

The book purports to represent the experience of the original est seminars, written by one who went through them. It shows them in a positive light, and describes how the ideas and the training affected the author as he went through the course. A section towards the end of the book discusses the background to some of the ideas in it.
