Early life

John Tennyson was born in Mabbotstown, Hugginstown, County Kilkenny in 1985. He was educated locally at Newmarket N.S. and later at St. Kieran's College, a school renowned for producing fine county hurlers. Playing career

Club

Tennyson plays his club hurling with his local club Carrickshock. Tennyson's older brother Pat, who also plays for Carrickshock, played in the Kilkenny team that won the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 2003.

Inter-county

By the early 2000s Tennyson had joined the Kilkenny minor hurling team. He was a key member of the side that won back-to-back All-Ireland titles at minor level in 2002 and 2003. He later played on the county under-21 team, before making his senior debut in 2005 and has been a key feature in the half-back line ever since. In his first year as a senior hurler he won his first senior Leinster Championship title. In 2006 Tennyson won his first National Hurling League title as a player. He later added a second provincial medal to his collection as well as his first senior All-Ireland medal following a defeat of Cork. In 2007 Tennyson was part of the Kilkenny team that won their thirtieth All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship and ninth Leinster Championship in ten seasons. He appeared as a subsititute in the All-Ireland final against Limerick, after coming on as a substitute to replace the injured Noel Hickey. Kilkenny won by a score of 2-19 to 1-15.
