Tony Kontellis (born 1935), is a former Australian professional wrestler. Kontellis has worked for many wrestling promotions throughout his career, including working for WCW Australia and WWWF for Vince McMahon Sr. Kontellis now resides in Sydney, Australia working as a trainer.

Career

Kontellis participated in the Greek team for the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia but a training injury forced him to withdraw. Travelling to South Australia to visit relatives, he was persuaded to enter professional wrestling by a local wrestler. He was training in a gym when he was noticed by a visiting American wrestler, Lou Newman, to whom would serve as a mentor during his early career.

In 1960, he travelled to Pakistan where he feuded with King Kong Czaja before moving on to Canada. Whilst in Toronto, Canada Kontellis wrestled for Frank Tunney's Maple Leaf Wrestling promotion but unfortunately received a head injury whilst there. In 1966, Tony Kontellis returned to Australia & New Zealand, where he fought Czaja, The Great Zorro, Wadi Ayoub & Steve Rickard.

In 1972, while in the WWWF, Kontellis wrestled opponents such as Joe Nova, Fred Curry & Jimmy Valiant. In 1974, Kontellis defeated Don Carson, Bill Dundee, Mr. Moto & Les Thornton. He also won the Australasian Tag Team titles with Pat Barrett defeating George Barnes & Bobby Shane in a tournament final.

In 2003, Kontellis and his son Paul opened the World Wrestling Alliance wrestling school in Sydney along with Libnan Ayoub who became its head trainer. From 2006 to 2008, Tony Kontellis was also a trainer with UWF Australia.
