The first USS "Benham" (DD-49) was a "Aylwin"-class
destroyer in theUnited States Navy ."Benham" was launched
22 March 1913 byWilliam Cramp and Sons Ship and Engine Building Company ,Philadelphia ,Pennsylvania ; sponsored by MissEdith Wallace Benham , daughter ofRear Admiral Benham; and commissioned20 January 1914 , Lieutenant CommanderC. P. Train in command.Following a shakedown cruise to the
Caribbean , "Benham" went into reserve24 July 1914 . Recommissioned21 December 1914 , she joined theTorpedo Flotilla ,U.S. Atlantic Fleet , for training and patrol along the east coast. She rescued the crew of the Dutch steamship "Blommersdijk"8 October 1916 after the steamer had been sunk by a German submarine offNew England . DepartingTomkinsville ,New York ,15 May 1917 "Benham" patrolled out of Queenstown,Ireland , until shifted to Brest,France ,10 June 1918 . "Benham" patrolled out of Brest until the end ofWorld War I , departing for theUnited States 21 December 1918 .Rejoining the Atlantic Fleet early in 1919 "Benham" took part in maneuvers before going into commission in ordinary at Norfolk
28 June 1919. During 1921 she cruised along the Atlantic coast until assigned toAir Squadrons , Atlantic Fleet, as a plane guard and tender. Released from that duty in May 1922, she proceeded to Philadelphia where she remained until decommissioned7 July 1922 .She was broken up during 1935 and the material sold
