Musical Biography

Kalyan Mukherjee was born in Calcutta, India in 1967 into a family that has, for long, expressed their interests in traditional art and culture. Kalyan's father Sri Ajoy Mukherjee was an accomplished Violinist and a disciple of Sarode maestro the late Ustad Bahadur Khan. Kalyan first learnt Tabla in the Lucknow Gharana tradition in his childhood. He was later initiated into learning Sarode and took primary lessons in Sarode from Shri Sachin Pal (Sachin Pal was a student of Ustad Alauddin Khan's student the late Shri Shyam Ganguly). Later, Kalyan came under the able tutelage of Sarode maestro Ustad Bahadur Khan of "Senia Maihar Gharana". Kalyan continued to learn from Ustad Bahadur Khan till the latter's death. Following Ustad Bahadur Khan's untimely death, Kalyan continued to nurture his musical prodigies under the guidance of Sitarist the late Shri Ajoy Sinha Roy.

Kalyan performs Sarode recitals with great applause in India and Europe, as well as teaches the thousand-year-old tradition of Indian classical music among his students. He has performed at major classical music venues in India.
