History

The station signed on with original call sign of WAGA [http://www.jeffreyleachman.com/AtlantaAM.html Jeffrey Leachman - Atlanta, Georgia AM Radio Directory ] ] in 1937 [ [http://www.fybush.com/sites/2005/site-050218.html A selection from a decade of visits to tower and studio sites in the Northeast and beyond ] ] . By 1946, WAGA had moved from 1480 kHz to 590 kHz. In 1959, the station changed to a top 40 [ [http://www.las-solanas.com/arsa/stations_item.php?rsid=833 WPLO 590 Atlanta ] ] music format and changed its call sign to WPLO which was in reference to the new ownership, Plough Broadcasting Company [http://www.wakeatlanta.com/wplo1_0.html wplo1 ] ] . Another format changed happened in 1966 when WPLO switched to a country music format. In 1987, the station changed call signs to WKHX and adopted the "Kicks 590" slogan. WKHX used to broadcast in Kahn/Hazeltine AM stereo with a Real Country format [ [http://users.eastlink.ca/~amstereo/offenders.htm Offenders of The Faith ] ] . Then in 1997, the station adopted the Radio Disney format and the current call sign WDWD.
