The Mystery Meat

The Mystery Meat is a five-piece rock band with only one release, "Profiles".

It was formed at Blackburn College in 1968 and once called: "the rarest garage band in the world" Fact|date=January 2007

History

In 1968, five college students from Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois formed a garage jam-band. It was originally meant to be only a pastime for the students, but in late 1968 they recorded the twelve original songs that they had written during the course of the year.

The vinyl was meant to be only for the members to keep, but somehow (either through one of the members or through one of the friends who helped record) it got resold, and gained underground popularity. The album was named for its title track "Profiles".

As of 2006, the original vinyls (of which there were about 20) are sold for about 6,000 dollars apiece.

Trivia

*Although none of the members of The Mystery Meat realized it, their album had been distributed in Europe, where it gained popularity. It has more recently been released in Japan, where it is enjoying a second wind.
*The bassist, Wayne Joplin, is supposedly cousin to Janis Joplin.
