Vardousia (municipality)

Vardousia (Greek: Βαρδούσια) is a municipality in Phocis, Greece. Population 2,216 (2001). The seat of the municipality is in Krokyleio. It is one of several municipalities that does not have any settlements. The municipality is named after the nearby mountain of the same name.

Geography

Vardousia are mainly mountains and covers the area, the central portion are forested, the valley portions contains farmlands and groves. The Vardousia mountains lies to the northeast along with the Pindus mountains.

Information

Much of the houses were stone built until the 1960s. Electricity arrived in the same year. Vehicles arrived in the 1970s, the pavement of the main road and television arrived in the 1980s and computer and internet are rarely known in the beginning of the 21st century and up to date technology are not seen.

History

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt.

Vardousias has schools, a lyceum (middle school) a gymnasium (secondary school), churches, banks, shops and a square ("plateia").
