Free alongside ship

Free alongside ship

Free alongside ship (FAS) is an incoterm. It means that the seller pays for transportation of the goods to the port of shipment. The buyer pays loading costs, freight, insurance, unloading costs and transportation from the port of destination to his factory. The passing of risk occurs when the goods have been delivered to the quay at the port of shipment. It is almost invariably used only for bulk loads. It also requires that the vessel be already berthed otherwise delivery cannot take place "alongside." It is not for use with containerised shipments. The full definition is published by the International Chamber of Commerce in their publication number 560 "Incoterms 2000".
