Bective Abbey

Bective Abbey

Bective Abbey ( _ga. Mainistir Bheigthí [http://www.logainm.ie/?text=Bective&placeID=1165523&uiLang=en] ) is a Cistercian abbey on the River Boyne in County Meath, in Ireland. The abbey founded by Murchad O'Maeil-Sheachlainn in 1147 as a 'daughter house' of Mellifont Abbey. Although nothing remains except old ruins and walls, it is in a remarkable state of preservation. Bective Abbey is easy to find thanks to many sign posts along the way and it sets in the middle of a farmer's pasture. You get access to the grounds by climbing through a small hole in a gate. A short stroll across the field take you to the wall of the Abbey, over which you must climb.
