Bagnoregio is a "comune" (municipality) and fomer bishopric in the Province of Viterbo in the Italian region Latium, located about 90 km northwest of Rome and about 25 km north of Viterbo. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 3,737 and an area of 72.6 km².All demographics and other statistics: Italian statistical institute Istat.]

Bagnoregio borders the following municipalities: Bolsena, Castiglione in Teverina, Celleno, Civitella d'Agliano, Lubriano, Montefiascone, Orvieto, Viterbo.The "frazione" of Civita di Bagnoregio is a famous touristic resort.

History

Anciently it was called "Novempagi "and "Balneum Regium", whence the medieval name of "Bagnorea".

During the barbarian invasions of Italy, between the sixth and ninth centuries, the city was taken several times by the Ostrogoths and the Lombards. Charlemagne is said to have included it in the Patrimonium Petri, and the Emperor Louis I to have added it to the Papal States in 822.

It is famous as the birthplace of the philosopher St. Bonaventure in the early 13th century.
