Talmud ical lines, he came early under the influence of theMaskilim .In 1868 Braudes became a contributor to "
Ha-Lebanon " ( _he. ), a Hebrew weekly published byBrill inMayence , and for several years he devoted his pen to topics of the day and tocriticism .It was as a novelist, however, that he was to make a mark in
Hebrew literature . In 1874 he published in "The Dawn " ( _he. ), a monthly edited bySmolenskin at Vienna, his first story, entitled "The Mysteries of the Zephaniah Family " ( _he. ), a tale of great promise from its style and vivid descriptions. The next year appeared his second novel, "The Repentant " ( _he. ), which was followed by one entitled "Religion and Life "; _he. ), treating of Jewish life. This remarkable work was published in "The Morning Light " ( _he. ), issued byGottlober atLemberg in 1875.Another novel of great merit, "
The Two Extremes " ( _he. ), appeared in Lemberg in 1885. In this book Braudes pictures in vivid colors theOrthodox andReform ed camps in modernIsrael .In 1882, at the time of the
anti-Semitic riots inRussia , Braudes plunged into theZionist movement and became one of its foremost advocates. To foster this idea he went toRomania , and began the publication atBucharest of "Yehudit ", a weekly inYiddish . At the end of two years, however, Braudes was expelled from the country.In 1891 he went to
Cracow , Galicia, and started a weekly in Hebrew, "The Time " ( _he. ). This paper existed for nine months, when, for lack of funds, its publication was suspended. Nothing of importance from Braudes' pen appeared in recent years.References
