(1988) |"You Got It" was the second full-length album from
Boston, Massachusetts hardcore punk /speed metal band,Gang Green .It was released in 1987, nearly two years after their previous release, "Another Wasted Night", in 1985. It was their first for a major record label –
Roadrunner Records – after leaving independent punk label, Taang.Chris Doherty and Brian Betzger were the only surviving members from the previous album. Joe Gittleman replaced Glen Stilphen on bass, and Fritz Ericson replaced Chuck Stilphen on lead guitar after "a major dispute". The brothers had since formed a band of their own called Mallethead.
Overview
Gang Green were one of those bands who were extremely hard to categorize – they were the self-proclaimed "King of Bands" on the Boston hardcore scene and they certainly had the sound and the attitude for punk. However, their fast songs and brutal riffs were gaining attention in the world of
thrash metal – a genre for whichRoadrunner Records were notorious for pushing. The first three tracks were undeniably
hardcore punk – rock and roll at high speed with catchy, three chord melodies."Ballerina Massacre" sees the band adopting some
thrash metal riffs in the chorus. "Born To Rock" and "L.D.S.B." – meaning "Let's Drink Some Beer" – were of a similar groove to the opening three tracks. Sandwiched in between those was perhaps the band's most famous track, "Another Bomb". It starts out in slow, semi-acoustic fashion (a la thrash) and builds to a crescendo of super fast thrash metal. On the flip side, the songs were noticeably longer – an instant indication that these would have more of a lean towards
speed metal than straight ahead punk. The album's closer, "Sick, Sex, Six", is an "epic" six-minute song – almost six times the length of a standard punk song.
After this album, the band became almost inseparable from D.R.I., another
crossover thrash band, as they toured extensively, stopping briefly to record anEP , "I81B4U " for a 1988 release.Track listing
