Joseph Wilson (martial arts)

Joseph Wilson, Ph.D. is a teacher, athlete, author, coach, speaker and police officer. He has been a full time law enforcement officer for over 10 years. During that time he has also run a successful martial arts school. He began his martial arts training at four years old and has been training actively ever since. He holds black belts and/or teaching certifications in several martial arts and yoga disciplines. His dedication to training led him to the famed Shaolin Temple in China, where he was accepted as a student and personally trained by the monks. He has dedicated his life to teaching and coaching people to reach their full potential mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally and socially. He has taught all over the United States, Europe and Asia.

He is the Founder and Technical Director of Memphis Martial Arts Center, and a P.O.S.T. certified, full-time law enforcement officer and internal affairs detective. He is now a full-time instructor at the largest sheriff's office training academy in Tennessee. He serves on the RMAX Head Coaching Staff with Scott Sonnon. He has been actively training in martial arts for 27 years and holds a 6th degree black belt (master level) Modern Kenpo, with additional black belts and certifications in many others including JKD, Kali and Silat. He is sought out by martial arts schools, law enforcement agencies, and private industries to provide training on a variety of topics ranging from anger management to self-protection. He holds a PhD. in Health and Physical Education and a master's degree in Criminal justice.

Wilson has been inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame as "Master Instructor of the Year" by the World Head of Family Sokeship Council. He has been inducted into this Hall of Fame three times.

In 2005, he competed on Scott Sonnon's team at the International San Shou Championship in Mobile, Alabama. He won the gold medal in his weight class.

In 2006 Wilson took a Bronze medal in the Tai Chi 24 form at the National Martial Arts tournament in Houston, TX.

In 2007 he was invited to the Shaolin Temple in China, where he was honored to perform for the Abbot Shi Yon Xin. While at the temple he was among few who were trained daily by the masters there.

In 2007, he competed at the International Savate Championship in Orlando, Florida as part of the 2007 Disney Martial Arts Festival, one of the largest martial art tournaments in the country. He won the gold medal in his weight class.
