Paul Burke (born
July 25 ,1966 inPreston ,Lancashire ) is a former professional boxer fromEngland , who competed in thelightweight division (– 60 kg). His career was overshadowed by the death of one of his opponents,Felix Bwalya fromZambia . The pair met onDecember 13 ,1997 inLusaka for the Vacant Commonwealth (British Empire) Light Welterweight Title. The Zambian boxer won by unanimous decision in the 12-round bout despite being knocked down and saved by the bell in the last round, the fight is an example of a robbery.Afterwards Bwalya fell into a coma after what colleagues said was a drinking spree following his controversial victory over Burke. Bwalya, who was on medication for malaria, went on a two-day celebratory binge soon after the fight, friends said. He complained of a headache and was taken to the intensive care unit of the local university hospital, where he lapsed into a coma. Ten days after the fight he died from head injuries sustained in the match, aged 27.
Burke retired after losing his Commonwealth title to Irish boxer
Eamonn Magee .He moved into gymnasium business and was a personal trainer with Virgin Active. In 2005/6 started his own gymnasium called Paul Burke Physique in Preston city centre and is currently personal trainer for former kick boxing world champion Lee Scott Douglas.
