HNLMS Van Speijk (K3)

HNLMS Van Speijk (K3)

The HNLMS "Van Speijk" (K3) was part of a program to build seven frigates capable of shore bombardments and escorting merchant ships. [cite web|url=http://www.marine.nl/schepen/eskader/fregatten/m-fregat/vanspeijk/geschiedenis/|title=Koninklijke Marine - "Geschiedenis Hr.Ms. Van Speijk"|language=Dutch|accessdate=2006-08-24] None of the ships were finished at the time the Netherlands got involved in World War II due to a shortage in material and qualified personnel, however the navy ordered them to be finished and equipped with minelaying rails.

During World War II the three finished ships, K1, K2 and K3, escorted convoys in the Kattegat strait and the Norwegian Sea. K3 was found in Norway after the war in such a state that she could be recommissioned. After the recommisioning she was redesignated F805. She mainly served in the West Indies until she was scrapped in 1960.
