Munawar Ali Khan (Devanagari: मुनावर अली ख़ान) (1930–1989) was a Hindustani classical singer of the Patiala Gharana.

Early life

Khan was born to the maestro, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Allah Jiwai in Pakistan.[1]

Career

Musical guidance for the young master came at the feet of his father the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and from his uncle Ustad Barkat Ali Khan.Munawar also learnt Dhrupad from Hussainuddin Dagar{Tansen Pandey} He accompanied his father to all his concerts and became an integral part of his father's recital after his father had a paralytic attack in early 1961.

Munawar had a full throated voice with open aakar and his style was much different from his father's quicksilver style.The "richness" of his voice was called golden by his admirers.After his father's demise in 1968 he started giving solo concerts and bravely faced the challenge as the "Khalifa" of the Kasur Patiala Gharana.

He was awarded A-Top Grade from All India Radio.He performed in all major music festivals in India and abroad.He toured extensively in Geramany,Switzerland,U.K. France,Australia and represented India many times in Afghanistan in 1986 and Pakistan in 1984 etc.

Munawar had his own approach to the Ragas and in his time he was one of the most demanding artiste of his era.He also joined Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi as a music teacher.He created many bandishes in Khayal and Thumri.He also composed geets and Ghazals of great beauty. He did playback in a Bengali film "Jaijawanti".He sang the Ragas which was not much popular in his Gharana and made them popular like Shuddh Kalyan,Bairagi Bhairav,Abhogi Kanada,Suha Kanada,Devgiri Bilawal,Ahir Bhairav and created a new Raga named Malini Basant. Munawar Ali Khan was also a successful teacher he used to teach his father's disciples Sandhya Mukherjee,Malti Gilani,Manorama Ahuja with great care. Amongst his students Ajoy Chakraborty,Indira Misra,Primila Puri,Sajjad Ali are the foremost,This Kasur Patiala legacy is now carried by his son Raza Ali Khan and his nephews Jawad Ali Khan,Mazhar Ali Khan,Naqi Ali Khan, and Abdul Aziz Khan. They all learnt form him Munwar Ali Khan has several discs to his credit both in India and abroad which was released by Audiorec,HMV,EMI Muisc and Sony Nad,

Death

Ustad Munawar Ali Khan died in 1989, at the relatively young age of 59.
