John Hamre (born
July 3 ,1950 ) is the current president and CEO of theCenter for Strategic and International Studies , a position he has held since April2000 .Education
Hamre received a B.A. in political science and economics from
Augustana College inSioux Falls ,South Dakota (1972). The following year he was aRockefeller Fellow atHarvard Divinity School . He also earned a Ph.D. from theSchool of Advanced International Studies ,Johns Hopkins University in1978 .Government
Hamre was Deputy Secretary of Defense from 1997 to 1999 under President
Bill Clinton . Before that, he was Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) from 1993 to 1997. In the 1980s, he worked for ten years at theSenate Armed Services Committee . During that time, he was primarily responsible for the oversight and evaluation of procurement, research and development programs, defense budget issues, and relations with the Senate Appropriations Committee. From 1978 to 1984, Hamre served in the Congressional Budget Office, where he became its deputy assistant director for national security and international affairs. In that position, he oversaw analysis and other support for committees in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. In2001 he was appointed by theUnited States Senate to serve on theCommission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry .
