Wheeling, West Virginia , that went on the airMay 2 1941 . WKWK'FM Went on the air on March 1, 1948. WKWK-AM & FM broadcast the CBS network programs until 1961 when it was purchased by a group of local businessmen including Lewis W.Dickey, the father of Lewis W. Dickey Jr. President of Cumulus Radio Corporation. He hired Chuck Dougherty, formally of KQV in Pittsburgh who turned the station to a Top 40 format and bought in two new disc jockeys from the Pittsburgh area. Bob Campo, Bill Quay, Chuck Dougherty himself did 3-7 in the afternoon. Chuck was a well known DJ at KQV in Pittsburgh at the time. By 1961 WKWK-AM (250 Watts)applied to increase their daytime power to 1,000 watts. WKWK-AM & FM became one of the top rated stations in the Wheeling Metro area all during the 1960s and 70's. Many well known radio personalities became one of the so called,"Good Guys" during that time. Don Caldwell, Bob Dorris, Jim Roberts, Joey Sherwood, Don Nelson, Joey Reynolds, Herb Allen, Don Amon, Don Guthrie and many others. The two stations began broadcasting separate formats during the 1980s. During this time, WKWK-AM (14WK) was an Adult Contemporary station, and WKWK-FM was billed as FM97, The Ohio Valley's best rock. It was programmed by, among others, Jackson Armstrong, Greg McCullough, and others -- with a small news department lead by staffers including Colin McNickle, John Dickinson, and Ed Coury. Notable air talent included morning man Mark Pennell, and D.J.s Maria Bonacci, Kenny Siebert, and others. WKWK-AM changed it's call letters to WBBD. In August of 2000, WKWK was purchased byClear Channel Communications . "The Mix" used to be known as simply K-97.3 before the new slogan(s), "It's all about variety," and "Playing the best hits from the 70s to right now." It currently airs the games for the Wheeling Nailers.External links
