Katwal is a surname used by Hindu communities. Katwals belong to Chhettri families. They from Nepal.

The Katwals derive their ancestry from the legendrary Hindu warrior Sant Khas Katwal who was known to be a devotee of the Hindu god Shiva.The Katwals are known for their valour and high intellect.They were the original inhabitants of the mountains and later on moved south to merge with other kshatriya castes.
