- Guy Gargan
Guy Gargan, a resident of Ocean City, N.J., was a professional boxer who competed at middleweight from 1973-1979, with mixed success, in and around his then-hometown of
Upper Darby, Pennsylvania .While his stay in Upper Darby was brief, it was all too long for one sweet, little family dog that wound up under the wheels of a 10,000-pound SEPTA bus.Though he has not fought in nearly 30 years, Gargan points out correctly that he has yet to officially retire, and he refuses to rule out a potential comeback, especially if talk of a proposed "senior division" in boxing ever materializes.Gargan was noted for his ability to withstand a punch. The highlight of his career was the "trilogy" with rival Archie Andrews. By many accounts, Gargan won that first fight, but the decision went to Andrews, thanks in no small part to a wrestling referee masquerading as a fight judge. Suffice to say, it was an unpopular decision. One can only wonder how many lives might have taken a different course if Gargan had gotten the decision he rightfully earned that night. Though he lost two rematches with Andrews, Gargan could be heard to say after the third fight (think Jake LaMotta talking to Sugar Ray Robinson in "Raging Bull"), "You never put me down, Archie. You never put me down."Gargan ended his career with a 11-4-5 record, including two TKOs.Gargan now works as a Sports Clerk and Writer at The Press of Atlantic City, where he enjoys microwave entrees and a good dinner roll. He occasionally dabbles in concrete work and in 1997 wrote a book about pirates that had a memorably risque Page 270.He is known to take nap breaks even on short drives and will belt out a pretty fair rendition of "How Great Thou Art" or "There Will Be Peace In The Valley" to quell his nerves during drives in even mildly foul weather. He is a noted "Magnum" historian and is a leading proponent of the "Less is more" lifestyle and philosophy.Gargan's fights
