Sir Sandford Fleming Elementary is a public elementary school in Vancouver, British Columbia part of School District 39 Vancouver.

History

Construction began in 1911, and opened in 1913 as South Vancouver High School. When John Oliver Secondary School opened in 1921, South Vancouver High was renamed General Gordon School and was converted to an elementary school and 300 students enrolled in Gordon. General Gordon was considered an annex of Makenzie when it reopened in February of 1921. Red and black were chosen as the Schools first colours. By 1916 the school had twelve divisions and spring of 1928 plans were approved to add a six room wing to the west end of the school. When South Vancouver was preparing to join another district municipality, there already was another school named General Gordon. It was renamed Sir Sandford Elementary School. In the Summer of 1945, Walter Moberly Elementary School was burned down and Fleming housed its 150 Students until it was rebuilt.

By 1947 East 49th Avenue was repaved and Knight Road was newly paved and by Fall a bus service had been added to make getting to school easier for students. With the roads getting busier the school grounds were fenced in. By the 1950s Gladstone Secondary School opened and all kids in Grade 7 and 8 were transferred. Enrolment dropped to 470 from 543. But by 1952 it had bounced back to 550, to accommodate the increase Fleming was rewarded $415,000 for a new wing. In February 1955 a school named Fleming 2 and three classes were moved to Fleming 2 from Fleming 1 along with some from Walter Moberly Elementary School, J. W. Sexsmith Elementary School, Van Horne and Mackenzie to make up the new schools population.

The new wing for Fleming 1 was opened 1959 with a new gym. Fleming 2 was reopened as John Henderson School. A new addition was added in the last few years which includes a new library and a computer lab and six new classrooms. The grounds of the schoolinclude the main front black top area, an inside courtyard, primary playground, intermediate playground and all-season field for soccer and other field related games.
