Kobryn or Kobrin ( _be. Ко́брын, IPA2|'kɔbrɨn; _he. קאברין; _pl. Kobryń; _ru. Ко́брин) is a city in the
Brest voblast ofBelarus and the center of theKobryn Raion . The city is located in the southweatern corner of Belarus where theMukhavets River andDnepr-Bug Canal meet. The city lies about 52 km east of the city of Brest. Kobryn is located at Latitude 52.12.58N and Longitude 24.21.59E. It is at an altitude of 485 feet. In prehistoric times it was inhabited by ancient
baltic Yotvingian tribe.At various times, the city previously belonged to
Lithuania n and Polish states, toImperial Russia , and to theByelorussian SSR . First mentioned in11th century , since late13th century the town belonged to the princes of Volhynian Vladimir. Soon afterwards, in early14th century the town formed part of theGrand Duchy of Lithuania . A seat of apowiat authorities, between1589 and1766 it was afree city of thePolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth , located onMagdeburg Law . This allowed for a large number ofJew s to settle in the area following the16th century .After the
Partitions of Poland of1795 , the town was annexed byImperial Russia . Occupied by Germany during theWorld War I , following thePolish-Bolshevik War it was handed to Poland under the terms of theTreaty of Riga and became a seat of a powiat within thePolesie Voivodship . During the Polish Defensive War of1939 the town was the scene of heavy fighting between thePolish 60th Infantry Division of ColonelAdam Epler and the GermanXIX Panzer Corps of GeneralHeinz Guderian . After three days of fighting the Poles withdrew southwards. Between1939 and1941 occupied by theSoviet Union , then until1944 by Nazi Germany. During the latter period the majority of Jewish inhabitants were first amassed in a ghetto and then murdered by the Germans in their extermination camps. In1945 the town was occupied once more by the USSR and attached to theByelorussian SSR . Since1991 it is a part ofBelarus .See also
