Bolsa Grande High School is a high school in Garden Grove, California and is a member of the Garden Grove Unified School District.

Athletics

Bolsa Grande's sports teams are known as the Matadors, and compete in the Garden Grove League of the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section with six other GGUSD schools. Sean

The Matador football team won the CIF Central Division championship in 1986 led by coach Greg Shadid, but has struggled since then. They have not made the playoffs since 1987, and hold the Orange County record for most consecutive losses, losing 43 straight games from 1999 to 2003. The streak was broken when Bolsa defeated their rival La Quinta High School in the final game of the 2003 season. In 2006, the Matador football team finished 4-6, making it the best season in over a decade, though they fell one game short of potentially qualifying for the playoffs. The 2007 season resulted in a 3-7 record, with another victory over La Quinta.

The boy's basketball team won the Garden Grove League title in 2006-07, finishing 10-0 in league play. They also won the Garden Grove league title in 2007-08, making it the first time in school history to win back-to-back league championships. Along with the basketball team, the girls cross country team also won the league title. Led by league MVP Rocio Pelayo, the cross country team reached the state championship tournament. Pelayo also earned recognition as 1st Team All-CIF Southern Section and 2nd Team All-State. As 07-08 rolled by, the girls cross country team won their second consecutive league champ. This year the team was led by League MVP Gabriela Ponce. The girls once again made it past CIF and went on to state where they placed 10th once again.

The boy's tennis team has been one of the few highlights in recent Matador history. They have had much success against Garden Grove League competition.

Distinguished School

Bolsa Grande has just recently been recognized as a distinguished school in California. Bolsa will remain a distinguished school until 2011. Bolsa was one of few schools in the Garden Grove Unified School District to receive this title.

Notable Alumni

Glen Titensor (Class of 1976): ex NFL player for the Dallas Cowboys in 1981, ran a 4.7 40-yard dash.
Mark Sollauer (Class of 1985): Drummer for many Orange County bands (Fuzzpop), now in Boston Ma., Plays drums in Drunks Don't Lie (www.myspace.com/drunksdontlie) Recorded several albums, TV, video and film work
Jerry Carr (Class of 1968): Played professional baseball with the California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. Carr, an RHP, played for head coach Mike Hall. Carr played for five years before knee surgery halted his career.

Marching Band

The marching Matadors like the picture above, represent the Bolsa Grande High School. They perform during football season, performing there show on the football field.The band director is John Miller, and percussion director Nate Cisneros.

Facilities

Bolsa Grande has 61 permanent classrooms in use on the campus. It is also home to one of only two on-campus football stadiums in the GGUSD (the other is at Garden Grove High School). All seven high schools in the district share these two stadiums during football season.

Demographics

For the 2005-06 school year, Bolsa Grande had 1,596 students. The student body was 50.1% Asian, 37.4% Hispanic, 8.5% White, 1.6% Pacific Islander, 1.4% Black, 0.9% Filipino, 0.1% Indian/Alaskan Native, 2% others.
