The 10th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment was mustered in for two years of service in Portland, Maine on October 4, 1861. It was mustered out on May 8, 1863. A fraction of the regiment consisted of three year enlistees, who formed the three-company 10th Maine Infantry Battalion. The enlistees were later amalgamated with the 29th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 13, 1863 to form Companies A and D, where they were command by George Lafayette Beal, former colonel of the 10th Maine.
