- John J. Lombardi
John Lombardi (born 1952) is an American Democratic
politician fromProvidence, Rhode Island . As President of theProvidence City Council , he briefly served as Mayor between the conviction of Buddy Cianci and the election ofDavid Cicilline .Lombardi graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1970. He attended
Rhode Island College , earning aBachelor of Arts in 1975. He worked as a teacher, earning a Master of Arts inSecondary Education from Rhode Island College in 1982, before turning his interests to law. He received aJuris Doctor fromSuffolk University Law School in 1987.In 1984, he was elected to the Providence City Council.
When
Vincent Cianci was convicted and was forced to step down, Lombardi, as City Council President took over. Lombardi considered running for mayor in his own right, but his wife talked him out of it. During his time in office he fired and demoted many of Cianci's appointees. He also tried to trim the city's budget.As of 2006, he represents Ward 13, consisting of the the neighborhoods of Federal Hill and West End.
