- Bill Stillfield
Colonel William "Bill" Stillfield was a character on the
television situation comedy , "Designing Women " played byDouglas Barr .Bill was a wealthy Air Force
colonel who met the Sugarbaker Design Firm when he was looking to have them design a wing of the Veterans Hospital in the name of his late father. He was previously married to a woman named Nancy, who had died of cancer. A young widower, he had met and fell in love with Charlene Frazier, when he came to the design studio. At first, they felt uncomfortable, but after a time and some sage advice from Julia, they settled into a wonderful relationship.Charlene had met his widowed mother, Ellen (
Benay Venuta ) and her sister, Phoebe (Anne Haney ). At first, Charlene felt totally out of place, because his family was wealthy and came from old Virginia money. However, Bill's mother grew to love Charlene, and even stood up to her snobby sister about her; "Phoebe, I'll thank you to not be a jackass to my new daughter in-law!", Mrs. Stillfield told her sister harshly, after she had made a disparaging remark about Charlene being cheap. The wedding was absolutely beautiful and it befitted a new military couple. Julia, Mary Jo, Suzanne and her sister, Darlene, were her attendants. On the honeymoon, they conceived and nine months later, gave birth to their only child, daughter, Olivia Frazier Stillfield, nicknamed "Livvie".
Because of Bill's assignments, taking him all over the world, and also because of the secrecy of the missions, began to make Charlene very insecure. When Bill was called into active duty for
Operation Desert Storm , she was nearly frazzled. During these times, she had Suzanne, Mary Jo and Julia to lean on and also Anthony. However, the couple persevered and despite his absences, it proved that absence really did make the heart grow fonder. When Bill was assigned to England, Charlene and Olivia accompanied him, leaving Atlanta behind.
