Avery Clare

Clare Avery (born 28 May 1945) is an artist, specialising in colourful abstracts in oils and in acrylics, including a substantial body of painted acrylic collages.

Avery was born in Buckinghamshire, England and had a peripatetic childhood mainly in London, Sussex and Surrey. After leaving school she studied at Brighton Art College and then was selected for the prestigious painting school at the Royal College of Art. One of her teachers was Peter Blake, best known for designing the Beatles' "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album cover. She graduated with a Masters degree in Fine Art.

From 1973 to 1984, Avery worked as a lecturer in at the art school in Rhodes University, South Africa, before returning to the United Kingdom where she lived until moving to France in 1997.

Her style has evolved through several stages, and recent work is highly abstract and very colourful.In 2005 she had a one-person show at the Chateau du Montbron, a publicly owned exhibition centre, in Montbron in the Charente region of France with 112 works on display.Avery has work in private and public collections in Britain, France, South Africa, The Netherlands and Germany. The Conseil General de la Dordogne bought one of her "MicroMegas" series of paintings for its public collection in 2005.She won the Royal Academy prize in 1969, the Sir Ernest Cassel Prize in 1983, and a First Prize in the 1998 International Exhibition of Miniature Art in Toronto.
