Gong mao(官帽, palace headwear)is the headwear of an official during the
Manchu Qing Dynasty inChina consisted of (in winter) a blackvelvet cap , or (in summer) ahat woven inrattan or similar materials, both with afinial on top. Red tassels extended down from the finial, and a largepeacock feather (with one to three "eyes") orpheasant feather (for lower ranks) could be attached to the back of the cap.The colour and shape of the finial depended on the wearer's grade. The royalty and nobility used various numbers of
pearl s. An officer of the first grade wore a translucent red ball (originallyruby ); second grade, solid red ball (originallycoral ); third grade, translucent blue ball (originallysapphire ); fourth grade, solid blue ball; fifth grade, translucent white ball (originallycrystal ); sixth grade, solid white ball (originally mother of pearl). Officers of the seventh to ninth grade wore gold or clear amber balls of varied designs.The Qing official also wore a
