football (soccer) club, playing in the city of Trujillo,Peru in the department of La Libertad.History
The Carlos A. Mannucci soccer club was founded on
November 16 ,1959 by a group of volleyball players. The Los Grifos (The Griffins), or "Carlistas," of Mannucci were born with the intention of increasing the practice of sport among Trujillians. There were several Trujillian's names that were very important for Trujillo, yet the name of Carlos Alberto Mannucci Finochetti, who died in 1956, was chosen as the name for the club. The Griffins started competing in the Trujillian league firstly with their volleyball and basketball teams, both achieving great success in each of the tournaments they participated. Mannucci started competing in football in 1963, and due to financial problems of the team of
Mariscal Castilla , Mannucci bought their place in the Trujillian league and thus Mannucci started its adventure in the football world. In 1967, Mannucci participated in the Trujillian league and eventually won as well as winning the right to participate in the Copa Peru and since that moment, the city of Trujillo started to look at the Griffins as their main representative in Peruvian football. Prior to this it was the club Alfonso Ugarte of Chiclín, known as the Los Diablos Rojos (The Red Devils), who were popular. However, ever since 1967, The City of Eternal Spring is identified with the colors of blue, red and white of the CSD Mannucci, whose popularity has reached other cities in La Libertad Region as well. In April 1968, The Griffins played the final of the Copa Peru in Lima and they won it gaining the right to play in the Peruvian First Division in 1969.
Unfortunately for the Griffins, the rules of relegation and promotion for the Peruvian First Division stipulated that two teams would be relegated (one from Lima and one from elsewhere) so despite the fact that Mannucci ended the tournament in the 9th position out of 16 teams, they were relegated. Nevertheless, Mannucci would win once again the Copa Peru the following year, assuring its participation in the Peruvian First Division in 1970. In 1972, without the financial support of the Carlos A. Mannucci firm, Mannucci was relegated to the Trujillian League.
In 1973, Mannucci was almost abandoned with no economical support. Fortunately, Mr. Alex Neciosup Alcantara decided to take over and then The Griffins began winning and reaching the finals of the regional phase against U.T.C, from
Cajamarca in theCajamarca Region , and eventually winning the regional phase. In 1973, there was no final for the Copa Peru, so the winners of the regional phase will be directly promoted to the Peruvian First Division. Consequently, Mannucci again gained the right to participate in the first division and once again gave outstanding performances.Current Squad
