Rosie Scott (born 22 March 1948) is a New Zealand novelist now based in Sydney, Australia.

Life and Work

Scott completed an MA(Hons) in English at Victoria University of Wellington and a Doctorate at the University of Western Sydney and worked in social work, publishing, journalism and acting during her literary career. Her second husband is Danny Vendramini and they have two daughters. She has lived in Australia since the late 1980s.

Scott wrote a volume of poems and a successful play before she began writing novels. Most of her books have been internationally published and translated and she has published in Rolling Stone, Metro and her short stories and essays have been widely anthologised in Australia and internationally. She won the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award for her play, 'Say thank you to the Lady', and her novels have been shortlisted for the Christina Stead National Fiction Award, NSW Premier Awards, Banjo Patterson National Awards, Biennial Adelaide Festival Award and The New Zealand Book Award.

Scott has been supportive of the literary community, serving on the board of the Australian Society of Authors for ten years, during which time she was elected Chair. In 2005, she was appointed to a permanent honorary position on the ASA Council. Scott has also served as the Vice President of Sydney PEN International [http://www.pen.org] , where she was politically active, particularly in refugee issues. She was awarded the 2006 Sydney PEN Award for services to PEN. Along with novelist Tom Keneally, Scott was nominated for the Human Rights Medal for her work with detained writers.

Her last novel, "Faith Singer", was included in both The 50 Essential Reads by Contemporary Writers, an international survey run by the Orange Prize, The Guardian newspaper and the Hay writers festival [http://www.orangeprize.co.uk/press/pressreleases/essentials.html] , as well as The Top 100 Book in Australian fiction, all genres.
