Albertas Šimėnas (born
February 15 1950 inPapiliai ) was Prime Minister ofLithuania for 3 days, from January 10 to January 13, 1991. He disappeared during theJanuary Events and was replaced byGediminas Vagnorius .Šimėnas graduated from
Vilnius University in 1972 with a degree in economics. On March 11, 1990 he signed theAct of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania , declaring Lithuania's independence from theSoviet Union . In January 1991, when the first government led byKazimira Prunskienė resigned due to rising prices, Šimėnas became the Prime Minister. In an emergency session,Gediminas Vagnorius took over his cabinet and became the Prime Minister. Šimėnas suddenly reappeared on January 14. Later, he was elected to theSeimas (1996–2000). He ran unsuccessfully in the 2004 Seimas and European Parliament elections, after which he joined the private sector.Šimėnas published several academic papers on economy and a monograph about economic reforms in Lithuania from 1990 to 1994.
