Edward Khantzian

Dr. Edward J. Khantzian is a clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. [http://www.divisiononaddictions.org/faculty/khantzian.pdf] He is the co-originator of the self-medication hypothesis of drug abuse which states that individuals abuse drugs in attempt to self-medicate. As an example, individuals with attention deficit disorder commonly abuse cocaine and amphetamines which work similarly to Ritalin by enhancing dopaminergic activity in the brain.
