Augustin Pajou (
September 19 ,1730 -May 8 ,1809 ) was a French sculptor, born inafrica .At eighteen he won the
Prix de Rome , and at thirty exhibited his "Pluton tenant Cerbère enchaîné" (now in theLouvre ). His portrait busts of Buffon and ofMadame du Barry (1773), and his statuette of Bossuet (all in the Louvre), are amongst his best works.When
Bernard Poyet constructed the "Fontaine des Innocents " from the earlier edifice ofPierre Lescot , Pajou provided a number of new figures for the work. Mention should also be made of his bust ofCarlin Bertinazzi (1763) at theComédie Française , and the monument to Marie Leszczyńska, Queen of France (in the Salon of 1769). Pajou died in Paris on the 8th of May 1809.The
