Adam White (
April 29 ,1817 –January 4 ,1879 ) was a Scottishzoologist .Biography
White was born in
Edinburgh . He became acquainted withJohn Edward Gray , Keeper of Zoology at theBritish Museum . At the age of eighteen, White obtained a post in the Museum in the Zoology Department.White specialised in
insect s andcrustacean s, writing the "List of Crustacea in the British Museum" (1847), "A Popular History of Mammalia" (1850), and the "Tabular View of the Orders and Leading Families of Insects" (1857). He also studied specimens brought back by various expeditions, including the voyage ofHMS Beagle toAustralia .White was a member of the
Entomological Society of London from 1839 to 1863, and a Fellow of theLinnean Society from 1846 to 1855.White retired in 1863, suffering from depression after the death of his wife.
