Susan Chepkemei (born
25 June 1975 inKomol ,West Pokot District ) is a femaleKenya n long-distance runner, who competes in the10000m andMarathon . In 2001 she won theRotterdam Marathon and came first in theGreat North Run , as well as winning the silver medal in the World Half Marathon Championships. She won also won the silver medal at the2002 Commonwealth Games in the10000m .She competed at the junior race of
IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 1990 and 1992, finishing 3rd and 16th, respectively. at the adult level, he attended the long race between 1998 and 2001, the best result being bronze medal in 2000. She made her marathon debut at the 1998Berlin Marathon and finished second.In her first four marathons Chepkemei had a win and three second-place finishes in the major city races 1998-2001. She was successively fifth, third and fourth in the World 8k CC 1999-2001 and took three successive silver medals in the World Half Marathon 2000-2002 (behind
Paula Radcliffe in the first two years), while in 2001 she won the Great North Run in 68:40. She improved her marathon time to 2:23:19 for fifth in London in 2002, a year in which at 10,000m she took the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games – in a personal best 31:32.04 – and won the African title.When Radcliffe set her stunning world record of 2:15:25 in
London Chepkemei trimmed her best to 2:23:12 for fourth place after reaching the halfway mark in 69:30. She was second inNew York in 2004 and 2005, and continued to run successfully in the half marathon, including wins atLisbon in both years and third in the 2004 Great North Run and2005 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships .On February 25, 2008, the IAAF imposed a competition ban of 1 year on Chepkemei. Their statement:
"The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has been informed by Athletics Kenya (AK) that the female athlete, Susan CHEPKEMEI has been found guilty of the following doping violation under IAAF Rules:Presence of the prohibited substance Salbutamol (S3. Beta-2 Agonists) in her doping control sample (IAAF Rule 32.2a). This doping violation relates to an IAAF out-of-competition doping control conducted on 10.09.07 in Nairobi, KEN."
