Julio Toribio

Julio Toribio is an American martial arts instructor and the founder of Seibukan jujutsu.

From 1968 to 1975, Toribio studied Okinawan Kempo Karate under David Martinez and Narciso Bultron in Puerto Rico. In 1975 he moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina and continued his karate training under Owen McDonald until 1982, achieving the ranks of Shodan and Nidan. In 1985, he began his studies of Shorinji Ryu Renshinkan Karate-Do under Adalberto Rosario in Puerto Rico.

Since 1980, Toribio has also studied Aikido . His training began at the Aikido of Monterey Dojo under Tom Gambell and Dennis and Danielle Evans. In 1981 he traveled to Iwama, Japan and studied directly under Morihiro Saito. Under the instructors of the Aikido of Monterey dojo he was promoted to Shodan in June, 1982 and to Nidan in May 1984. Toribio became a direct student of Frank Doran in 1986. In May 1987 he achieved the rank of Sandan in Aikido through Danielle Evans and Frank Doran. He returned to Iwama, Japan in 1989 as uchideshi under Saito. Morihiro Saito Sensei is 9th dan and was a direct student of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido. On May 30, 1992 he was promoted to Yondan, 4th degree black belt, under Frank Doran who is a 6th degree black belt and chief instructor of the Aikido West Dojo in Redwood City, California. Toribio is one of the Aikido instructors of the Aikido Association of Northern California, Division 2, under the supervision of Frank Doran. In Nov 98, he was promoted to Godan (5th dan) in Aikido.

Julio Toribio began his study of Hakko ryu Jujutsu in 1981 under Brian Workman, receiving his Shodan in January 1983, Nidan in March 1984, Sandan in August 1986, and Yondan in July 1988. The following year, he traveled to Japan for two months, where he studied Hakko-Ryu Jujutsu and Koho Shiatsu under the 2nd grandmaster Ryuho Okuyama, senior instructor Yasuhiro Irie and other senior instructors at the Hakko-Ryu Honbu Dojo. In September 1989, he received the title of Menkyo Shihan (licensed Master Instructor). In addition, he received certification in Koho Shiatsu (Finger Pressure Healing Therapy). In September 1991 he returned to Japan for three months. During that time he went through Kaiden Shihan training completing that level on October 10. Later, he underwent the seventh and highest level of training in Hakko-Ryu Jujutsu, receiving the title of Kaiden Shihan Sandaikichu on November 15, 1991. Toribio became the fourth Hakko-Ryu teacher with this title in the United States.

Currently he is studying Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu/Ninjutsu directly with the 34th Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi-Soke of Togakure-Ryu Ninjutsu. Toribio began his studies with Richard Van Donk in 1990, 10th dan and direct student of Hatsumi. He was promoted to Shodan in October 1993. In the Winter of 1993, he traveled with Van Donk to Japan to participate to continue his studies with Hatsumi and senior instructors. In November 1994 Toribio returned to Japan to further his studies and was promoted to Nidan. The following November, 1995, Toribio became a direct student of Hatsumi. Currently, Toribio holds the rank of 10th dan with the title of Shidoshi (Bujinkan teacher) and continues to travel and train in Japan.

In 1985, Toribio began his study of Iaido under Kazuo Chiba in Berkeley, California. During Toribio's travels to Japan, he met Kenshinsai Machida, the Nidai Soke of Enshin Itto Ryu Batto Jutsu system and was accepted as his direct student (jikideshi). In November 1993 he was promoted to Shodan and promoted to Nidan in May 1995. In April 1996 he was tested and promoted to Shoden in Nen Ryu Batto Jutsu by Machida. Later that year he was again tested and subsequently promoted to Yondan in Enshin Itto Ryu Batto Jutsu. In Nov 97, Toribio was promoted to Godan (5th Dan) and in 1998, to Rokudan (6th Dan).

Toribio served in the U.S. Army for eight years active duty and four years active reserve. The first four years of his active duty service, he studied the art of war. The last four years of his active duty service, he studied the art of healing. Some of the schools he attended and qualifications he received in his military career and training were: Infantry (EIB), Airborne and Ranger School, Jungle Training, Combat Medic, Nursing School, and Physical Therapy School.

Julio Toribio is the founder and chief instructor of Seibukan Jujutsu at the Action Self Defense Academy Academy and Seibukan Dojo. The Seibukan Jujutsu Headquarters is located in Monterey, California. Toribio is co-developer of the Model Mugging self-defense and empowerment course for women and men, and founder of the Action Self-Defense program. He has worked extensively in developing effective methods of instruction for law enforcement officers, adults, children, teenagers and disabled individuals in self protection and personal growth. As Director of the Action Self-Defense Academy and Seibukan Jujutsu Headquarters he oversees a variety of programs in self-defense, martial arts and Seibukan Jujutsu Schools.
