Israel (footballer)

Israel Bascón Giga, aka Israel, (born 15 March 1987 in Utrera, Sevilla) is a Spanish footballer who currently plays for Real Betis of the Spanish La Liga. Israel is a right-sided midfielder.

Career

Real Betis

Israel made his debut for the first team of Real Betis against Real Sociedad on 16 March 2005. During the 2004/2005 season he made 8 La Liga appearances. He also made 3 Copa del Rey appearances, even scoring his first Betis goal against CD Mirandés. During the 2005/2006 season he made another 8 La Liga appearances, of which 7 were as a substitute. He appeared in one UEFA Cup match and in two UEFA Champions League matches. He appeared as a substitute against Liverpool at Anfield and started against Anderlecht. He has a contract with Betis until 2011.

Chelsea & Mérida UD

Israel spent time at Chelsea on trial during August 2006, after a move to Real Madrid Castilla failed to materialise. His trial was unsuccessful and Israel then left Betis for Mérida UD on a loan deal. During August 2006 he was in a serious car accident where he broke a collar bone and suffered several contusions. Due to this incident and further injuries he was unable to feature in the first team of Mérida. He returned to Betis in July 2007.
