Bathurst Street Hunt Club
- Bathurst Street Hunt Club
The Bathurst Street Hunt Club was founded in a moment of comedy by Ernest Hemingway in 1920. The story goes that, having arrived on horseback at the door of his lady friend on Bathurst Street, Toronto, he took her riding up and down the street proclaiming the foundation of the Bathurst Street Hunt Club. In 1964, Richard Kessler, Michael Ondaatje and others reinaugurated the club while students at the University of Toronto. Their exploits included, among other things, leading protests against the Vietnam War, and attempting to contact the ghost of Ivan Reznikoff in the Soldiers Tower with the help of members of the department of physics. In 2005, the club was convened once more, with the ambition of playing host to speakers on revolutionary topics. It is an official student society of the University of Toronto, and holds meetings at Hart House on the St. George Campus.
